How to Tell It’s Time for Window Replacement

Do you have old windows in your home and are not sure if it's time to replace them? Here are some signs you should look out for that will let you know your old windows need to go.

You See Frost on the Inside of the Glass

Modern windows with double pane glass will have a barrier between the two panes with a special insulating gas. It is designed to separate the glass on the inside and outside of your home, which prevents the outdoor temperatures from transferring to your home's interior. You should be concerned if you see frost on the inside of your window during the winter since it means that there is a problem with the window where the insulating gas has escaped. It's possible that all the air from outside is getting between the two glass panes and you are not feeling the benefits of double pane glass anymore.

You Feel a Noticeable Breeze

When a window is working to the best of its ability, you shouldn't be able to feel any sort any air coming in from outside of your home. That is why it is a big problem if you can actually feel the breeze while standing next to a closed window. This is an indication that something is wrong with the window's seal because now outside temperatures are finding a way in through small gaps.

You Notice Cracks in the Frame

Your window frame material should be of solid construction to prevent outside air from getting in. However, there may be cracks in the frame when the window has started to show signs of old age. The cracks may even occur so gradually over time that you don't notice the cracks until they become quite big. These cracks may be a good indication it is time to get window replacement, especially if the cracks are letting air in from the outside.

You Struggle Getting the Windows to Stay Open

A window that is working well should be able to stay in any position that you place it in. What often happens is parts of the window get so much wear and tear over the years that they can't stay in an open position anymore. It causes you to either prop the window to keep it open or ignore the problem. This is a good reason to get replacement windows, so you can help you get a good cross breeze going on cool summer days.
