Four Window Repair Tips To Stop Drafts And Prepare For Winter Weather

If you want to be prepared for winter weather, stopping drafts is important. One of the areas of your home where you can lose the most energy is damaged windows. The problems can be caused by bad weather stripping, old caulking and damage to the window frame. Missing insulation can also be a cause of problems with the windows in your home. Here are some tips to help you deal with window damage and prepare your home for winter weather:

1. Repairing Damaged Casing And Caulking Outside Of Windows

The casing around your windows can be the source of drafts in your home. This can be due to caulking and paint wear that causes casing to rot. The first thing that needs to be done to deal with these problems is repairing the casing. Once the casing is repaired, you will want to caulk the window and paint it to protect any wood materials from rotting.

2. Addressing Issues With Old Glazing And Single Pane Glass

Old windows often have single pane glass with glazing that holds it in place. When it becomes worn, it can be a cause of drafts in your home. Reglazing the windows can help reduce the cold air in your home. You may also want to consider updating old glass with film to help make it energy efficient.

3. Repairing And Replacing Weather Stripping Around Window Openings

Weather stripping can be another problem that allows cold air to get in your home. The stripping around windows is often a rubber or plastic-like material that will dry and crack with exposure to the weather. To keep the cold out, check the weather stripping on your windows and doors, and replace any materials that are worn and cracked.

4. Checking For Insulation And Insulating Around Window Frames

Insulation can be another problem causing drafts in your home. The windows should be insulated between the wood framing and window casing. You can check this by removing trim and adding insulation if needed. It is best to use strips of batten insulation around windows, which can be cut in strips and stuffed in between the casing and wood framing. Do not use spray foam because it can damage windows as it expands.
